A man wearing glasses, a blue checkered blazer, and a light blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves, sitting with arms crossed against a plain gray background.

Years ago, a kid from The Bronx wondered how the world works. Little did he know that this curiosity would lead to building some wonderful products…

I'm Rob Padilla, a product leader with 10+ years experience turning complex, data-driven platforms into commercially successful products. I thrive where the product challenges are hard, the customer problems are complex, and the stakes of getting it wrong are high.

My career has been spent at this intersection, primarily in B2B scientific R&D, a demanding proving ground for product leadership. As a Director of Product Management at Springer Nature, I own the P&L for a €16M Digital Life Science Solutions portfolio, and lead a globally distributed team.

Through a combination of developing AI-powered platforms, data monetization, and strategic partnerships, I’ve consistently delivered 5% year-on-year growth (2x the industry average) for mature products while launching new, impactful products.

The career path was unconventional: starting in New York, I left for a Ph.D. in chemistry from Berkeley, then moved to Germany to be a research scientist at BASF, and later a technical editor at Thieme and Wiley, before getting into product management via the materials science space. I now call London home.

This winding route, however, is an asset. It's given me the ability to go deep on complex domains quickly and translate that depth into products that delight users and deliver for the bottom line.

This site is where the longer stories of my work live: case studies, lessons, bets that worked, bets that didn't, and my experiences building both products and teams.

Beyond the Office

"Only boring people get bored…"

That's an infamous quote from an uncle of mine. Fortunately, I almost never find myself bored since my interests are broad and varied. I'm a longtime science and history nerd and enjoy visiting museums and historical sites, particularly those connected to ancient history. My artistic pursuits include photography and calligraphy. I'm also a huge football fan (soccer, to my fellow Americans), avidly supporting Real Madrid. Given my chemistry background, I love cooking and experimenting with new recipes. As the old saying goes: "chemistry is just like cooking, just don't lick the spoon!"
